BIOGRAPHY
DJ Names: Dj Poroufessor /the Toki/ The Fessor/ 05 Porou....was also known as Dj Bumblebee, Dopey, Maddmixa & Honan (back in early 92)
Dj Style: Turntablist / Band performer / Club Party Dj / Television & Radio Mixshow Dj
Grafitti alias: Exoduz, Freeway & Crazy Crew were names Hone began painting (circa 86..started painting in the backshed with anything that would spray, paint, oil lubricants, underarm deodorant!!!ha..)
1st Djing memory: Back in 1986 Hone would play with his parents 3 in 1 stereo. Using the function switch he realised that you could hold the switch in between the "phono" and "tape" and that it would play a tape whilst moving a record on the top. This was basically the core ingredients to his first cuts.
That was the defining moment, Hone later made up mixtapes of bits an pieces of samples recorded/cut together using this method...hideous!!! (and he still has them)
HISTORY- first experiences as a practising Dj
From 1988 to 1995 Hone played clubs making $$$$ to supplement other incomes. It was all just good fun, playing music and getting paid for it!!! how easy.
He learnt how to read crowds & along the way, marketing and promotional business skills. Hone played mostly in Rotorua, Tauranga, Taupo, Kawerau, Gizzy with the oddd jam session in Hamilton with other djs he was meeting in the scene (Freeman, Rick Rush, Peter James, Militia)
He was at this time also a fulltime art student perfecting his Maori artskills and crafts (Thats another whole story!!!) and was selected to work in Chicago USA. He spent 15 months in Chicago.
Whilst in Chicago I exposed to all forms of music in the weekends. Chicago Techno, Jazz, Hiphop and Reggae where experienced by the true originators. Hone met Marky Mark, Snap (I got the power!!), R Kelly & Public Announcement, House of Pain, L7, Beastie Boys with Dj Hurricane & The Movement. Live concerts weekly were the normal and this 'Maoriboy' got to see as much as possible from Arrested Development, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprasy, Highland Place Mobsters & Rob Base & Dj EZY Rock.
Returning to Rotorua on completion of his time away, Hone was back in the groove honing his DJ skills under the tutelage of Dylan Semu, Terry Tuaine, Darryn Tahata & Peter James. Playing regular gigs at Towers Niteclub, the Fentons Tavern, the Icehouse, Aces, Harringtons, Alexandras & the Soul Bar in Tauranga.
1st Turntable - Hone bought his 1st Technics SL1200 Turntable "while on the dole djing" this was a big purchase at that time being a student, but taught Hone the value of being on time with payments. Buying records was hard as there were no record stores selling vinyl so the odd trip to Auckland meant a trip to Real Groovy and Truetone(now closed down).
Towers Niteclub DJ and good buddy Dylan Semu gave Hone his first mixer to go with his new turntable, it was a long 5 channel thing, had no cross fader but I could get his soul out of it.
DJ Sirvere - Hone first met Phil Bell aka Dj Sirvere when he was managing the sounds store at St Lukes 91. He showed Hone the C+C Music factory remix of "Do you wanna get Funky" with Cheryl Lynn, That track was a club banger in my one crate for years..hmm and still is in 2006!
Hone is proud to have Phil aka DJ Sirvere as a friend & mentor, he just about goes to bed with that SL1210 Sirverel!!!
